9 Must-Have Small Kitchen Appliances
Maybe this sounds like you: you’re browsing Pinterest for ideas on dinner, and you find that perfect recipe. You run to the kitchen, start getting your ingredients together, and that’s when you see it.
‘Whisk egg whites until they fall in soft peaks.’
Ugh. You don’t have the equipment for that!
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. When setting up your kitchen, it can be hard to know just what you’ll need. And you tend to find out at the worst possible time.
Well, we’re here to help.
Maybe you’re setting up home, getting the kitchen of your dreams or just want to update your collection of small kitchen appliances. Whatever the reason, keep reading for the 9 countertop appliances you’ve simply got to have.
1. High-Speed Blender
High-speed blenders are great for taking basic ingredients and whizzing them down into delicious soups, smoothies, and shakes. But that’s not all.
With a high-speed blender, you can make a variety of foods that commercially sometimes have iffy ingredients – mayonnaise, for example, with its list of preservatives.
With this nifty gadget, you can make real mayonnaise ’til your heart’s content, all while keeping track of every ingredient.
We love the Vitamix A2500 for its 2.2-peak horsepower, its automatic ‘set and forget’ settings, and its built-in wireless technology.
2. Food Processor
With your busy lifestyle, it can be hard to find time to do all of your vegetable preparation as well as getting the meat in the oven and planning your dessert.
Well, a food processor will do that for you. Throw your vegetables down the wide chute that protrudes from the lid, and your carrots, leeks, and onions will be sliced to perfection in seconds.
And the boring task of chopping garlic? A food processor will take care of that.
These magical devices will also mincemeat, make dough for bread and cookies, and grate all the cheese you need for your lasagna.
Our favourite is the Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro for its extra-wide feed chute, its multiple slicing options, and its durability.
3. Stand Mixer
For egg whites whipped to peak perfection and beautifully airy cake batter, you’ll need a stand mixer. Stand mixers mimic the motion of whisking by hand, but with such extreme power. They’ll even leave your grandma in the dust! (Sorry Grandma.)
While they’re synonymous with baked delights like cakes and breads, stand mixers are also wonderful for whipping cream, mashing potatoes and… shredding chicken, believe it or not!
Our choice of these small kitchen appliances is the classic Smeg Retro Collection stand mixer. It has a range of accessories, its large capacity bowl yields 9 dozen cookies, and it comes in a rainbow of colors! What’s not to love?
4. Espresso Machine
With more and more of us having transitioned from coffee lovers to coffee connoisseurs, we’ve become really, reaaaaaally picky about what makes a good cup of coffee.
Instead of buying your coffee to-go and being disappointed with the lack of crema, the lukewarm milk or the weak strength, why not make it yourself?
There are plenty of espresso machines on the market. You can use pods, ground coffee, or – the best option – straight-up beans.
Yup, our favourite pick has to be this bean-to-cup DeLonghi Magnifica Esam 3300 automatic espresso machine. It preserves the flavour and oils in the beans and feeds them directly into your cup for the perfect brew, every time.
5. Toaster Oven
While they take up more countertop space than a regular toaster, toaster ovens are one of our best-loved, multi-functional small kitchen appliances.
Baked goods like chunky (delicious) bagels, cinnamon buns, and pastries may be too large or sticky for a regular toaster. But with a toaster oven, just pop the items on the mini tray, slide it in, and you’ll be chowing down on some baked goodness in no time.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. If you’re making a small meal or reheating pizza or lasagna, for example, your toaster oven will cook it faster. Want to roast a chicken? No problem!
We love the Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Oven for its sleek lines, easy cleanup, and range of trays.
6. Electric Tea-Kettle
Of course, you love a good cup of tea, but even if you don’t, you still need a tea kettle.
Kettles keep water on a rolling boil for a few seconds so you get water at the perfect temperature to pour over your teabag.
They’re also great for boiling the water for your pasta or hot chocolate, and for sterilizing stuff.
Our favourite has to be this Smeg Retro Collection Variable temp kettle. It looks super cool, has a 7 cup jug capacity, and an auto shut-off at the selected temperature, and the keep warm function is super handy for those that want that second cup of tea.
Your microwave is a kitchen essential, and its uses are endless. You can reheat food, sure, but you can also make mug-cakes, crisp up bacon – even disinfect your cleaning cloths!
There are hundreds of microwaves on the market, and some will grill or bake for you, too.
Since you’re already likely to have an oven and a toaster oven though, we recommend the Breville Quick Touch. We love that it senses the moisture in your dish and cooks it without drying out your food.
8. Countertop Grill With Additional Plates
Grilling food gives you great flavour, often with minimal fat, for the health-conscious among us. But the weather often dictates just when we get that delicious smokey flavour.
Well, if you invest in a countertop grill, you’ll be able to cook every day of the year if you want. These small kitchen appliances are great for cooking meat quickly and draining off excess fat. They cook both sides at the same time for a nice even grill.
Indoor grills have come a long way, and now some are even multi-functional.
We love the George Foreman Evolve grill, which comes with a choice of plates – you can even make waffles on it!
9. Slow Cooker
Let’s end with a great one, shall we? Slow cookers are totally underrated.
What if we told you there was a way to come home from work and have a meal ready for the entire family, ready and waiting in the kitchen? And no, the answer isn’t a maid.
A slow cooker is like your own personal chef. Just throw the raw ingredients and spices in there in the morning, and then… just walk away. Come back several hours later, and dinner will be ready to serve, hot out of the slow cooker.
Our pick is the All-Clad Slow Cooker. It’s fully programmable, has a ‘keep warm’ setting and a ceramic insert that’s dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.
